Welcome to Our Choir
We are a lively group in Newtown who enjoy singing a wide variety of musical styles - with a big focus on songs you know and love!

How to Join
The Bridge on the River Choir is always happy to accept new members. There's no audition and you don't have to be able to read music.
Get in touch through the contact page or you can also just come along any Wednesday evening during school terms, sit in and have a sing.
Rehearsals are held Wednesdays from 7.00pm to 9.00pm in the Hall at Newtown Public School, Norfolk St. Please enter through the basketball court.
Vocal parts
We are an SATB choir, which means there are four different parts. This means no matter your range we can find a part that suits you!
Soprano is the highest, most suited to high female voices.
Alto is next, and is most commonly the pick for mid-lower female voices.
Tenor usually encompasses high male voices.
Bass is very low, ideal for deeper male voices.
In our choir, to balance numbers and also accommodate range, we do not always have female and male voices singing their traditionally allocated parts. Our tenor section includes a number of low female voices!
You don't need to work it out yourself. Just come along and our musical director and members will help you find what works for you.

The Bridge on the River
The choir takes its name from a footbridge over the Cook's River close to where we had our first rehearsals. One of our founding members, Lulu, captured the spirit of the choir and the bridge in this wonderful watercolour.
Any reference to the 1957 film is, well, water under the bridge.

Musical Director
Mikaela Johnson
Mikaela Johnson is a conductor and educator passionate about community music and bringing people together. Beginning piano and flute at a young age, she was mentored by teachers who inspired her to nurture her skills and share them with the community. This led to performing in ensembles such as the Penrith Youth Orchestra and the South Pacific Concert Band.
Mikaela's dedication to her craft led her to pursue a Bachelor of Music in Flute at Excelsia College, studying under Svetlana Yaroslavskaya. This experience inspired her to further her studies with a Master of Music in Conducting under the esteemed Sadaharu Muramatsu. Her time at Excelsia College was marked by numerous accolades, including the prestigious Valedictorian award. Mikaela has conducted the Penrith Youth Orchestra, Strathfield Symphony Orchestra, Excelsia College Choir, Bankstown City Choir and currently serves as the musical director at Bridge On the River Choir and WollCon Symphony Orchestra, a testament to her exceptional talent and dedication.
